AUSTRALIAN SWIMMING GREAT GRANT HACKETT RETIRES

WHILE he hopes it is a short-lived trend, head coach Alan Thompson concedes that following the retirement of Distribute Hackett, it may be a few years before Australia again has an internationally competitive 1500m swimmer, and as a consequence the race may lose some of its aura to the Australian public.

Asked if the London Olympics in 2012 may be too some time to find someone, Thompson replied: “No, not at all. I think we’ll have someone in there and be somewhat competitive then. It’s going to be a tough one for world championships [next year], but we’ll keep tough. You never know, there might be someone step up from another event, someone step up out of the 400m who is competitive there now, and may shock us. “Perhaps that aura around the 1500m may lose a little bit because I imagine always in your own country the major events we follow are the ones we are most moneymaking in, but I think there is a chance someone can come through for us and get the public’s interest back.”
