I'm watching Pumpkinhead and Guido on the Toronto Hockey Show. Here's my charge for tonight: Live blog the Luke Schenn mentions.
It won't be truly what I had planned when I was in Edmonton, which was to count the number of "uh"s Sir Rodney utters in an Oilers telecast - my guess would be four figures, easy - but this'll do.
Pre-game show: Camera niggardly-up on Luke Schenn taking a dump. Pierre: "Either the kid is tribulation from rectal bleeding or he ate too many beets at the noon meal! What a giant!" (I kid; just wanted to make sure the "Reveal Post" button still worked).
4:31: Less than 30 seconds into the scatter, dressing room camera shows Seen Stamkos getting geared. Luke Schenn was a Tandem join up Canada teammate, says Duthie.

The league Versus its fans
We all understand by now that the revolution will not be televised, and us Washington Capitals fans unqualified to attend in person will be forced to tune into tonight’s racket vs. Nashville the old fashioned way: in front of the transistor radio, mellowed hockey cards arranged in front of us, imagining the action. Because of you, Versus and the NHL!
The contract between the league and Versus provides for an except for “game of the week” on selected dates. Tonight is one of those wonderful dates, and that ready is Philadelphia vs. Atlanta. In the “exclusive” point period (the time of the game’s broadcast, i.e., 7pm to 9:30pm Eastern), no other misrepresent may be broadcast in the United States.
In most cases, no other game is scheduled unless it involves two Canadian teams. Not so tonight. And we have to withstand this once more this season, on December 2, vs. Florida.
Certainly Versus has grown in subscribership, and increased its hockey ratings and subscriber fees over the soul of its contracts with the league. And I’m sure that hockey deception advertisers are willing to pony up a few more bucks for airtime during a distraction that’s the only televised game in every town. Top for them. And you’d have to think that its marketing department was relieved to have heard the rumour that Ovechkin isn’t playing tonight.
As the president of Versus, Gavin Harvey, said upon declaration of the contract extension with the NHL through ‘11 back in January, “It was a meeting-changer for us . . . Without the NHL, we’d be in a more difficult pickle.” No anxiety.
Harvey also added, at the time, “If you’re into hockey, you’ll stay for Happy Extreme Cagefighting, and maybe even for hunting and fishing.” Well, you will, won’t you?

The Versus Hockey Blackout

The Nashville Predators are in Washington tonight to freedom the Capitals, but as we noted yesterday, after playing in 203 consecutive games, wunderkind Alex Ovechkin won't be there to address them.
Neither will any television cameras.
You see, as was pointed out earlier today by The Red Skate, one of the absorbing wrinkles of the league's television contract with Versus allows the telegram network to designate a number of its broadcasts as a "game of the week." That means the band has agreed that no other games will air in the U.S. during that designated time slot. In most cases except for one other sundown this season, the league has jiggered the schedule in order to move sure that no other games are scheduled to conflict with a Versus "sport of the week."
Unfortunately, tonight is not one of those nights, and the folks at Versus have asseverative to feature the Flyers and the Thrashers in the 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. EDT conditions slot. Meanwhile, a couple of hundred miles away in Washington, the Capitals and Predators will perform, but the television signal will never leave the building.
So what's the big idea? There's only one saneness why broadcasters insist on blackouts, and that's because they want to funnel viewers to their output rather than allowing them the option to switch to something else. In theory, if hockey fans don't have any other alternative, they'll simply eat what's put on their plate. And tonight, that plate is Flyers and Thrashers.
Unfortunately, thanks to the conspiring with's success in promoting the NHL Center Ice package and NHL GameCenter Breathing, fans are becoming used to getting what they want when they want it. So while Versus will indeed have a window of exclusivity for their show, NHL Center Ice subscribers will still be able...
