Eubank JNR. packs a punch!

Self-proclaimed Chris ‘thimply the bethst’ Eubank is hoping that his 19 year-old son Chris Eubank Jnr. is about to comply with in his footsteps and embark on an illustrious boxing career. Earlier this month at the Hilton Brighton Metropole Eubank Jnr. fought in his first British boxing amateur conflict with and won convincingly on points. He may be more introverted and less brash than his father but those closest to him accept he has more than enough talent to realistically have ambitions of Olympic 2012 pomp.

“He has bags and bags of potential which we can bring out in his next fights” 

In June of this year Sussex-based Eubank Jnr. returned tellingly after two years in Las Vegas where he was trained by former middleweight world titleist Mike McCullum. Speaking about his protégé, McCullum said “in a few years England is effective to have another world champ named Eubank. I go in the ring with him and he’s apt.” Clearly McCullum has a lot of faith in him and under his tutorship Eubank Jnr. was victorious at the prestigious Golden Gloves amateur competition in Michigan at wonderful-middleweight level, which his father also won in 1984.

Today, Eubank Jnr. is back in Sussex and a colleague of the proud Hove Amateur Boxing club. On the 4th of October Eubank Jnr. strike Luke Batstowe from Moulsecoomb in an unanimous points mastery in a performance that reminded many people of his father; not only by the manner in which he leapt over the top lash in his entrance but also by his shadow boxing.

For the purpose of this report I attempted to get an sound out with the young Eubank, unfortunately I was rebuffed. Unlike his dad, Eubank Jnr. does not crave the limelight. In truthfully Eubank himself has gone on record to say his son has “been advised not to refer to to the Press until he’s halfway through his pro career”. Maybe this will be a bounty in disguise, after all the antics his father got up to he will want to build up a notorious based on his boxing ability that is not overshadowed by tomfoolery.

OK, if you’re reading my articles regularly, you be acquainted with that I like learning new martial arts styles. Mostly I’ve focused on the Northern Chinese styles, the ones based around Wudang Mountain. I academic the classical Snake Style Kung Fu as a change up from jiu jutsu, and then highbrow a bit about the Southern (or "modern") Snake Style that was created by Controller Leung Tin Chu at the turn of the 20th century. Master Leung blended a lot of Shao Lin Kung Fu stances strikes with Wing Chun design fluid motions to create his Snake Style, and when I skilled more about it, it got my curiosity piqued about Shao Lin style Kung Fu.

Like the northern styles, Shao Lin Kung Fu is a unite of philosophical techniques, and spiritualism with hard exercise meant to heart the mind and tone the body. Unlike the northern styles, Shao Lin practices heart a lot more on the physical nature of it. Not to the same extent that Tae Kwon Do or Karate do, inclination, but much more so than the Wudang internal schools do.

Anyway, after learning about the Shao Lin influences, I had to go find a more "rigorous" creator to see what was up. I found a dojo that I could visit as a student, and watched for a while, learning the differences in stances – Shao Lin stances are a lot more predisposed and upright – there’s less of the "tiger crouch" in them, and more of a focus on using the arms and hands to bung up rather than redirect from what I’d learned. A lot of this is because the Shao Lin Kung Fu styles are built around the theory of a weapon being in the practitioner’s hand, usually a staff, and that requires a more straightforward position than I was used to.
